The stranglehold the religious factions had on Saudi society had to be loosened if Saudi was ever to achieve success under Vision 2030. This is the story of how the once mighty religious police was cut down, allowing Saudi society to open. ​

Yet, the government’s crackdown on extremist and radical dissent attracts criticism from the Western media and governments—most dramatically, Canada. To neutralize this criticism, the crown prince continues to build networks of support and investment for Vision2030, requiring him to walk an increasingly narrow tightrope​.
